Manage Docker licences¶
This guide describes how team leads issue and manage Docker Desktop licences through docker.com. For background on why Docker Desktop requires a paid seat, see Docker Desktop licensing in the containers explanation.
Roles and responsibilities¶
- Team leads are owners of the Docker organisation. They are expected to issue and manage accounts for the members of their own team, including removing members who no longer need a seat.
- Team members who need Docker Desktop should ask their team lead for a seat rather than contacting Docker or another team's lead.
If you are a team lead and not yet an owner of the Docker organisation, ask an existing owner to grant you the owner role from the organisation's members page.
Issue a licence to a team member¶
- Sign in to the Docker admin console with your Docker account and select our organisation.
- Navigate to Members and select Invite members.
- Invite the team member using their
@cam.ac.ukemail address and assign them the Member role. - The team member will receive an invitation email. Once they accept it, their account occupies a seat and their Docker Desktop installation is covered by the subscription.
The team member should sign in to Docker Desktop with the invited account so that their usage is associated with the organisation.
Remove a licence from a team member¶
When a team member leaves the team or the University, or no longer needs Docker Desktop, their team lead should remove them from the organisation:
- Sign in to the Docker admin console and select our organisation.
- Navigate to Members, find the member, and remove them from the organisation.
Removing a member frees their seat for reuse.
